When hearts are tender, careless laughter can cause deep wounds
A long time ago, you got in the habit of fighting to do what you want. While this is important, many of the things you were fighting for at that time are no longer rewarding. Yet because you battled for them, you’re keeping them as part of your life, mostly to remember what you’ve achieved.
Yet times have moved on and, in fact, the kind of review that was once important for you has changed. It’s not just about finding new battles, but also exciting and rewarding new activities and possibly individuals in your life.
Habits are important, and they might be viewed as kind of an arbor that holds up roses in the garden. However, in your particular case, those habits can hold you back. The trick is to regard yourself as if you were a plant that bloomed anew each season and that as you bloom, you must choose what you want to be drawn toward, just as a flower is drawn toward the sun.
It may well be that certain activities and goals that were once rewarding actually no longer mean that much. While you’re inclined to reach toward others, decide what those are, commit to them, and, within a very short time—months or possibly even weeks—you’ll be achieving them.
Tempting as it is to stick with those you care about, every once in a while you need a break, and that involves doing something with somebody new. It may just be a one-off visit, or it may be someone who will become an important part of your life. But in every case, mixing it up, blending family and friends and those you’ve known forever with new encounters, will be the tonic you need.
Maybe you’re looking for a quick formula for feeling better or you’ve heard about one from others, but you’ve lived in your body for a while and you’ll be using it for a while yet. And so, making it comfortable and happy may also take time. Regard it as if you were caring for a beautiful piece of furniture that needed to be cared for over time. Don’t rush it into being perfect; enjoy the process of looking after it.
